How Relays Are Used In Heating And Conditioning Systems

Importance of Relays in an AC Unit

As we all know, there are different components in an air condition unit, and HVAC or “Heat, Ventilation, and Air condition” system will also have different elements. As the heating and conditioning systems are concerned there are the components that are the one that switch the system’s high voltage on and off, and they are called the relays

There is a low-voltage coil and a high-voltage switch that is called “contact points”, and these contact points can be seen in a relay. Basically, when your thermostat switches on, the low-voltage part will energize the right relay. There is so much detailed process about the relay, and one of the most important things to know is when and how you will replace your relay, and also choosing the appropriate relay for your unit. 

There are indicated symptoms for your air condition unit to be considered if the relay is malfunctioned. One is concerned with the inconsistent cooling. The compressor of your air condition unit is powered by a relay. So in more sense, if your relay is not functioning, the air condition system will not produce cold air. On the other hand, as the air condition compressor is made up from relay, when there is a failure on it, the unit has no ability to produce cold air also. 

Another symptom is when your air condition compressor is not turning on. Usually, when you turn on your air condition compressor there is a sound or a “familiar click” that you can hear, this means that the clutch is being activated. When you cannot hear the sound it means there is a problem with your relay.

Relays can be replaced. Below are the steps on how to replace a relay in an air condition unit. 

  1. Turn off your air conditioning unit’s circuit breaker. This circuit breaker can be seen in a disconnect box for some units. If there is no disconnection box, just turn off the system at the circuit breaker panel. 
  2. Compare your new purchased relay from the old one. There must be a sticker on the relay’s housing because this will be the one with electrical information. 
  3. Label with the use of masking tape the relay’s terminal identification numbers. 
  4. Pull each wire’s terminal connector off of the relay’s terminals with needle-nose pliers.
  5. Remove the screws holding the old relay in place with the correct screwdriver.
  6. Take out the old relay of the air conditioning unit, and place the new one. Secure the new relay in the unit with the screws that held the old relay in place.
  7. Push each wire onto its respective relay terminal, using the tape labels. Use the pliers to push the connector. Each wire connector must slide completely over the relay’s terminal.
